Polar Explorer Ben Saunders Powered by Potage

Our good friend and British Polar explorer Ben Saunders, is underway with his latest and most epic challenge. He is undertaking an extraordinary 1,000 mile attempt to be the first person to ever cross the continent of Antarctica solo, unsupported and unassisted. It's likely to take him around 65 days as he crosses west-to-east from Berkner Island to the Ross Ice Shelf via the South Pole.

Ben will be dragging a sled behind him with absolutely everything he needs  Fully loaded on day one, this weighs around 130kg and is packed with some 400,000 calories - 6,500 per day - as well as all the equipment he requires.

Within this precious cargo is tucked a stash of around 200 Potage brownies - Ben made a special request to us some months ago as he is particularly fond of them! Rationed to around 2 each day, they're not a substantial part of his daily calorie intake, more a morale booster and a familiar comfort food from home to enjoy on those tougher days he will have.

On Ben's day 7 blog post, he kindly gave our brownies a particular mention:

‘In an attempt to boost morale this evening, I had two potage chocolate brownies, something my future self will curse me for when he has a brownie-less day later in the expedition. I quoted Winnie the Pooh – as I made a v-sign to my future self and ransacked the sledge for this precious treat – who I’m sure said something like “If we eat all our supplies now, we won’t so much to carry”…’

Ben is supporting The Endeavour Fund, part of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The Endeavour Fund supports wounded, injured and sick veterans through providing opportunities in sport and adventurous challenge. Ben is dedicated to continuing the legacy of his friend Henry Worsley, who raised more than £500,000 for the Endeavour Fund, and so sadly gave the ultimate sacrifice in attempting this same journey two years ago. If you would like to help Ben support The Endeavour Fund, you can donate here.

Godspeed Ben, the Potage team are thinking of you each and every day ....xx
